The weekend will begin with a GTA Map Rally written by Chris Bean. This rally will use official Virginia DOT county maps (used in several memorable Virginia events in the past) and require competitors to define the course using one of several route-defining concepts as defined in the general instructions. It will be similar in format to the second half of the 2010 USRRC GTA but will feature less overload and a shorter run time (around 6 hours, starting no earlier than 10 am). The event will finish with dinner, provided by the committee, at Amy’s Cafe in Falmouth, VA.
Saturday will feature Dave Head’s Virginia Reel Course Rally. It is expected to be challenging but not enigmatic, including a compass heading feature to more elegantly handle off-course loop closing (bring your GPS or compass). The rally is expected to be less than 200 miles and includes ample breaks to avoid fatigue as a performance factor, as some longer rallies do. The rally will end with dinner available on your own at the Riverboat on the Potomac in Maryland, just offshore Colonial Beach, VA. Poker tournaments will be offered at 630 and 9 pm with a free comedy show available at 9 pm as well.
Sunday will feature Dave Head’s Magical History Tour Rally. This event will contain no additional challenges beyond simply computing the leg time and coming into the checkpoint exactly on time-a “zero hero” rally to be enjoyed as a low-pressure event suitable for sightseeing while competing. Several historic sites in the area will be featured. The weekend will finish with dinner, provided by the committee, at the Blue & Gray Brewing Company.
Rally Headquarters is the Wingate by Wyndham, 20 Sanford Drive, Fredericksburg, VA 22406 (I- 95 Exit 133B). Phone 540-368-8000 before September 26 and mention “USRRC” (or perhaps “RoadRally”) to access our group block with rooms available (2 double beds or one king bed) for $80/night (plus 10% tax) for Thursday through Sunday nights. Please make your reservations through this group block to support the events. Richmond will likely provide fewer options and higher costs for those flying in but will undoubtedly have better traffic. Most will fly into Washington, but plan for 2 hours or more to travel south on Thursday (any time after 2 or 3pm) and similar to travel north on either Sunday evening or Monday morning.
