I have found that the majority of questions and problem reports I receive about the Richta GPS Checkpoints timing and scoring systems are duplicates or have been experienced earlier by another rally organizer.
In many cases, the problems experienced may have been avoided by following the guidance I’ve discussed in the presentations and related documentation I’ve published about the system.
I’ve collected the most essential recommendations into a series of best practices for using the system. I’ll discuss these on Thursday, May 25, at 8 EDT (7 CDT). I’ll be one of two presenters at the SCCA Quarterly Road Rally Zoom session. My topic will be Richta GPS Checkpoints: Best Practices.
For those unfamiliar with the term, “Best Practices” are a series of practices that, when followed, lead to a positive result. I’ll describe what an event organizer should do before, during, and after an event to use Richta GPS Checkpoints successfully and post the recorded session after the meeting.
The charts I’ll be presenting are available here.

Continuing the series of Quarterly Zoom Get-Togethers, which started in 2021, the SCCA RoadRally Board announces that the next session will occur on Thursday, May 25, 2023, from 8:00-10:00 PM EDT. Click here for the SCCA announcement and link.
Topics featured are:
- Richta GPS Checkpoints: Best Practices, presented by Rich Bireta. I’ll cover best practices when using Richta GPS Checkpoints and handling unusual situations.
- RoadRally and MSReg, presented by Ryan Cunningham. This will answer questions about how to use MSReg to register participants for RoadRally events.
Both sessions will offer plenty of time for Q&A!
