RoadRally has gained positive recognition and support within the Club in recent years, and I want to keep that momentum going. As a group of enthusiasts, we once had an adversarial relationship with National Staff, but now we have very good cooperation with them. We once had no interest in aligning with the priorities of the Staff or the other Programs. We are now collaborating successfully to offer Club members opportunities to try RoadRally as part of events that draw participants from multiple Programs.
We once trained and licensed our Safety Stewards using outdated materials and methods, but now we are in the vanguard of the Club’s online training effort. We once got little to no mention on the Club’s website or SportsCarmagazine, but now our events and our people receive frequent positive exposure. This progress took time and a great deal of effort from several people, including current and past members of the RoadRally Board, working under the leadership of Rich Bireta and Jim Crittenden. My goal as current Chair has been and will continue to be to keep moving in the same direction they set for us.
During the dark early days of COVID, RoadRally canceled many events, as did other SCCA programs. But through innovative methods such as online-only registration and the use of GPS-based controls, we resumed competition within just a few months. The number of participating Regions, events, and entries has grown steadily since then. I don’t see our Program turning back to the old ways.
The SCCA, which focused primarily on elite-level competition, now pays equal attention to members who want to have “fun with cars.” Those are the men and women who don’t have a dedicated track car but want to experience the thrill of competition. Or members who have a vehicle that they would not risk entering a race but are looking for an excuse to drive. RoadRally offers those folks a chance to do both. This is why we added Trek events, rejuvenated the Regional Development Committee, and worked with National Staff on opportunities to get more members and even non-members involved in our Program. I fully support all of those initiatives. Opportunities for numerical growth and increased enthusiasm around the RoadRally Program are, in my opinion, as good as they have been at any time in my more than 20 years as a member, worker, competitor, and leader. We have the right people, the right structure, the right attitude, and the right technology for this moment. Let’s make the most of it!
