My Dad was the spy in our family, yet I enjoy genealogy – delving into finding the answers, now using modern technology. RReNews contacted seventeen Rallymasters to bring you news of their events these past four weeks. In this edition, you’ll read the wonderful rally wrap-ups from eight requests (we hope others will be forthcoming). Coming from the MGs of Baltimore’s Eric Salminen, we received a snippet of information from a community posting and decided to follow the trail. It led, fortunately, to a kind soul who replied to a cryptic message from Alaska via his Maryland online neighborhood site. Terence K “Skip” Bosley, thank you for your kindness to my inquiries!
On May 8th, Skip posted to his NextDoor community:
My Daughter Mimi and I had a great day yesterday, 5/7/2023, attending the “Get the Dust Off” Car Rally. It was sponsored by the MG Car Club and started from the Dejon Vineyards on Hydes Road in Hydes, MD. There were about 40+ cars of all types, sporty roadsters, classics, convertibles and more ordinary wheels. The fun loving competitors were of all ages, as were the vehicles. Tho it was a competition, all were in it for the fun and social bits. We each were given detailed instructions on following the 50+ mile course through Baltimore, Harford Counties, and Southern Pennsylvania, with very tricky marker spots to be found and noted. We would be graded as to accuracy and prizes awarded at a well planned and fun filled after party. The routes were amazing, beautiful views, windy roads and lovely little towns. I thought I knew the locale pretty well, but I was very pleasantly surprised by many new and very interesting locales.
We started at 10:00 AM and finished about 3:00 PMish. There was food, drink and music (a really good singer-guitarist) to relax the weary adventurers.
Prizes were awarded, and a good time was had by all! Google “Get the Dust Off Rally” for next year for anyone interested. Obviously we had a Ball! Another surprising treat found in our wonder filled neighborhood!
This fostered immediate conversations on the site:
Cathy inquired, “Do u happen to hang on to the instructions you were given.. maybe u could share here? I would like to take that drive! Sounds like a fun outing for next year.” Skip was quick to reply, “They will have a completely new course next time. Before we set off, alot of effort is spent explaining how the program works with lots of Q&A from the participants. You will be fully informed, but it is demanding if you want to win. We carried a pair of binoculars you, you must have a clip board and pens, there is an entry fee $20.00 this year it’s a good value. I know you’ll love it. See ya next spring!”
Cheryl added, “My husband and I were there after the course to meet friends who were in the rally. It was a nice time – much better weather than last year helped!
Karen said, “The(y) should offer the map as another fundraiser!”
“So fun Dad!” chimed in Mimi, Skip’s Daughter, featured with him in the photo below:
On May 16th, a little more background on Skip arrived as we tried to get a few photos of him and Mimi during the event, “I hope this picture gets to you, I’m sorta hit and miss on this stuff. I’m 86yo and still workin at it. I was a sports car enthusiast back in the fifties when it first started (read The Last Open Road by BS Levy; it could be my story). I had several race cars my first was an MG-TC and among others I raced the first Triumph TR-3B in the US. Many tales to tell! We put our Lance truck camper on the Blue Canoe Ferry the AK a few years ago. It was magnificent Alaska is Grand! Love to All, Terence (Skip) Bosley”
Wouldn’t we all wish to have our fellow rallyists sharing the good news of the sport (and our rallies), building interest and enthusiasm for others to give it a go as well? Our April edition received a request from a Rallymaster to learn more about the SCCA Texas Region’s photo rally, and others have spoken that they have used clever rally ideas by Rallymasters as read in the pages of Road Rally eNews. We know of three folk who shared they learned of rallies “in their neighborhoods” through the listing in RReNews. You never know the reach of your involvement in our sport – as a Rallymaster sharing the news of your event to entice participation or sharing the story, standings and snapshots after the rally. Or as a competitor, sharing your adventures with family and friends, and as Skip did above, on a community forum to garner interest from others.
