SUMMARY:NJ: Witch Way is Plus/Minus? Road Rally
DESCRIPTION:The Witch Way Is Plus/Minus? Road Rally\, sanctioned by the South Jersey Region of the SCCA\, will feature a Plus/Minus Rule directing  you to turn to increase or decrease your County Route number. For example\, if  the current rule is Plus 5 and you’re on route 600 you’d use the rule by turning onto route 605. If you can add two numbers you can do it. The first few legs of the rally will be tutorial in nature to explain how it works.\nEntry fees are $25 to $30 per team. \n

SUMMARY:PA: It’s About Time XXI Road Rally
DESCRIPTION:The Blue Ridge Mountain Sports Car Club presents It’s About Time XXI Road Rally on February 21\, 2016. \nRegistration:  Registration is at 12:00PM and the first car starts at 1:01 PM. Rally fee is $10. \nStart: McDonald’s on Route 22 in Delmont. \nThere will be a break at the Sheetz in Blairsville\, and the event will end at the Boulevard Restaurant across US22 from the start. \nDescription: A trap rally with changing main road rules and lettered route instructions (only 5). These will all be on stickers. The course is 65 miles\, and the first car should finish about 4:45 PM. \nTo receive a copy of the General Instruction set by email\, contact Chuck by Thursday Feb 18th at refdesignpit@comcast.net \nWhat beginners should bring with them: \nFor starters – there should be two of you in the car: a driver\, and a navigator (who isn’t inclined to get car-sick reading while moving\, or has an antidote for it). \nBring a mechanically sound car* that has a tenths -reading odometer (a resettable trip odometer can be a help)\, a clipboard\, a four function calculator\, several working pens\, a set of highlighters (for marking up the route instructions) and post-it notes. \nIf you can choose between a mechanical odometer that ‘rolls’ and a digital display\, the mechanical will enable you to interpolate to the hundredths. If you only have the digital tenths\, then you’ll have to do a lot more ‘guessing’ in between the numbers clicking over. We have folks who have gotten good at this with practice! \nWhile every team has their own procedure\, it’s useful to be able to highlight things like speed changes\, and free zones (remember – there is a tutorial to get you started!) so that ‘on the road’ it helps you remember them better.  The post-its are to stick on your dashboard to remind the driver of the assigned speeds and what the active course following priorities are. \nAlso – having a good map of the area that includes secondary (and tertiary roads) can be very helpful if you get lost and can’t regain the rally course. \n*While a cell phone and a AAA membership can’t hurt\, a lot of the time\, we’ll be traveling on roads that are well off the beaten track\, and you may not have much of a description of where you are!  ‘Well – we got here by turning left after ‘Snodgrass’\, then right at T\, and left by protection… ‘  While a GPS unit probably won’t help you very much while running the rally\, it may be very useful for telling AAA where you are if you break down.

SUMMARY:NY: Great American Mountain Rallye
DESCRIPTION:FROM THE EVENT ORGANIZERS — September 3rd Update! \nAutomotive rally teams from the northeastern U.S. and beyond will gather October 12–14\, 2018\, to challenge their cars and themselves in a 700-mile Revival of the Great American Mountain Rallye (GAMR)\, a European-style endurance event that was held annually from 1953-1957 in upstate N.Y. and New England. \nThe route of the Great American Mountain Rally Revival has been finalized. The rally is made of transits between self-start timed sections. While there are times required to complete the entire day\, it is not necessary to be on time all the time; therefore\, drivers can enjoy the mountain roads and the colorful autumn leaves that New England is famous for in the fall without the constant timing stress except for the timed sections. \nIf you want to take part in the Great American Mountain Rally Revival or have any questions\, then please call the Rallymaster: Gary Hamilton: 978-500-8039 or E-mail questions to: GAMRR2018@gmail.com (preferred as we may not always be in good cellphone reception).\n \nTo learn more about the Great American Mountain Rally Revival\, click here\, and you’ll be taken directly to MotorsportReg\, where you can also register your team!\n \nYou can also head over to the Steve McKelvie blog by clicking here. You’ll want to check out other rally writings there\, too; it is a wonderful blog for our sport!\nGeneral Instructions will be posted on the New England Region website at www.ner.org.\n_________________________________________________________________________ \nWe do have a post on the website for the event from February 2018\, and we received this update on March 25th — \nWe have been working on a revival of the Historic Great American Mountain Rallye that was run in the mid-late 50s from NY up through New England to the Canadian Border. \nIt is finally coming to fruition. \nWe have some sponsors\, including Hemmings\, and the Sports Car Club of America will sanction it! \n_______________________________________________ \nMarch 23\, 2018 \nFOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE \nCONTACTS:Gary Hamilton\, Rallymaster\, 978-500-8039 GAMRR2018@gmail.comSteve McKelvie\, Rally Chair\, 508-520-7135 shanna12@comcast.net \nRevival of 1950s Great American Mountain Rallyeto challenge drivers and cars retracing the historic 800-mile route\nELDRED\, N.Y. — Automotive rally teams from the northeastern U.S. and beyond will gather October 11–14\, 2018\, to challenge their cars and themselves in an 700-mile Revival of the Great American Mountain Rallye [GAMR]\, a European-style endurance event that was held annually from 1953-1957 in upstate N.Y. and New England. \nDriver-and-navigator teams competing in the GAMR Revival will gather on Thursday\, October 11\, 2018\, at Churchill Classic Cars\, Eldred\, New York\, for orientation/inspection. Teams will receive authentic 1953 Mobilgas maps and written instructions about which portions of the original 1100-mile GAMR route to follow. The next morning\, drivers will start their engines\, and navigators will guide them northward through Vermont to the Canadian border\, southward to New Hampshire\, and then back over the Vermont border to the finish line. Rally officials will throw the checkered flag on Sunday\, October 14\, 2018\, at Hemmings Motor News in Bennington\, Vermont. \n“This is an extraordinary event that will celebrate the way rallies used to be\,” said Rally Chairman Steve McKelvie. “Although it’s not a typical rally\, the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) has sanctioned the event as a New England Regional Rally.” \nThe original GAMR\, described in April 1956 by Auto Age as “America’s longest\, toughest\, and coldest rallye\,” was the first U.S. rally listed by Federation Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA). It attracted local amateurs\, top drivers from American car clubs\, automotive factory teams\, and driving celebrities. \nThe Rootes Motors team in 1953 and 1954 entered top British driver Sheila van Damm. In 1954\, Formula 1 racer Stirling Moss competed. In 1956\, F1 Champion Juan Manuel Fangio served as the official starter\, throwing the green flag; and Monte Carlo Rally winner Maurice Gatsonides was a contender. Cars included both foreign and domestic\, such as the Buick Century\, Chevrolet Corvette\, Ford Crestliner\, English Ford Anglia\, Jaguar XK140\, Lincoln Capri\, MG TF and Magnette\, Porsche 356 Speedster\, Renault 4CV\, Saab 93\, Sunbeam Alpine\, and Triumph TR3. \nPrior to starting the Revival on October 12\, this year’s teams will receive route instructions in a written narrative and original 1953 Mobilgas Maps of Southern and Northern New England: identical to those of 60-odd years ago. Only roads appearing on these maps will be included. All teams will be restricted to equipment similar to that used in original GAMRs: \n• Rally odometers with up to 2 distance displays are permitted; rally computers providing average speed information are not allowed\, except for Halda Speedpilots.• Mechanical calculators and slide rules are permitted; electronic calculators are not.• Paper speed tables are permitted; electronic speed tables are not.• Clocks and stopwatches are permitted without restriction.• GPS mapping assists are not permitted. \nAt the 2018 finish line\, 1st\, 2nd and 3rd places will be awarded in 3 classes: \n• Original: Cars that could have competed in 1950s GAMRs (model year 1957 or older)• Classic: Cars of model years 1958-1980• Modern: Cars of model years 1981 or newer \nGary Hamilton\, a land surveyor from Ipswich\, Massachusetts\, and Steve McKelvie\, a civil engineer from Franklin\, Massachusetts\, collaborated to recreate the 2018 GAMR Revival as authentically as possible. Original rules required entrants to use written instructions and 1953 Mobilgas Maps. \nArmed with the above information—as well as Google Earth© and Garmin Basecamp© software—Hamilton developed the route into a map. The original GAMR rallies were modeled on Europe’s grueling classic rallies\, and Hamilton and McKelvie continued with this approach: “Why go to Europe when you can do a European-style rally here?” asks McKelvie.

SUMMARY:VT: Winter Challenge Rally
DESCRIPTION:The 15th Annual Winter Challenge Rally Weekend will consist of a single SCCA New England Region rally running from 4 PM Saturday until 2 AM Sunday with two breaks. Although no car-breaking roads will be used\, the majority of the roads chosen are rural and unpaved roads\, which will undoubtedly be snow and ice covered. The rally will go no further east than Littleton\, NH\, no further north than Lyndon\, VT\, no further west than Montpelier\, VT\, and no further south than Randolph\, VT. \nThis year the rally will again be STRAIGHT-FORWARD; no tricks and traps\, perhaps a bit less ‘busy’\, but with two or three opportunities to get off time – but NOT off course! It will\, of course\, be necessary to drive ‘briskly\,’ mostly in the third section. \nThe route of the rally will be approximately 250 miles\, with a maximum distance between gas stops of 90 miles. The break between sections will be about 1 hour. There will be approximately one control per every 9 miles of rallying! (That’s one of the things that makes rallying ‘fun’.) \nMuch of the rally will be run at night on remote back roads. You and your vehicle must be prepared for backcountry winter driving. This means good winter tires or DOT-approved studs\, a warning triangle\, a shovel\, and a tow rope for the vehicle. This means warm clothes\, blankets\, flashlights\, food\, and whatever else you deem essential. \nThe 15th Winter Challenge Rally will be broken into three sections\, each with its challenges and instruction format. \nThe first section will be in the written instruction format. This section will be a TSD rally; a relatively easy course following; I don’t expect people to go off-course! Some TSD experience is always helpful. Boringly slow! \nThe second section will be a combination of 2-15 mile map sections and tulip diagrams\, brisk in places. \nThe third section will be tulip drawings\, with mileages to most instructions; brisk in places. \nOverall the Winter Challenge will be a thorough test of competitors’ rally expertise\, ability to use their heads\, and car control on snowy roads. \nSTART/FINISH: The Winter Challenge Rally Weekend will headquarters at The Hollow Inn. There are some additional lodging options in the area. The Hollow Inn will try and accommodate an early check-in time of 11 AM; ask about it when making reservations. \nDIRECTIONS: From I-89\, take Exit 6 (Rte 63); follow four mi. to the traffic light. Left on Rte 14. On the right\, approximately 3/4 mile. \nFEE SCHEDULE: \nSCCA Member           $ 50.00 \n2 Non-Members         $ 60.00 \nLate                             + $20.00 \nRALLY CLASSES: \nClass A: Allows full rally computers and/or extra odos. \nClass S: Stock Odometer in stock location or GPS – odo portion only. \nNo NER Novice \nSCHEDULE: \nRegistration: 1 PM – 2 PM \nQuestion time (optional): 2 PM \nRI’s given out: 3 PM \nDriver’s Meeting: 3:30 PM (mandatory) \nFirst Car Start: 4 PM + \nFirst Car Finish: 2 AM (approximately) \nAwards/we’ll have some: 3 AM \nGENERAL NOTES: \n\n The rally entry will be limited (30 cars).\n Normal entries close [in hand with proper fee]: Monday\, 4 February 2019\n 4PM start again to allow people from far away to get to the start on time.\n The rally this year will be straightforward – no ‘onto’\, no ‘redundant instructions’\, etc.\n\n The Rallymaster had his fill of these setting up A Bridge Too Far. \n\n The “Question Time” will explain TA’s\, TZ and basic timing info only (not required).\n Rally Generals will not be mailed (posted at www.winterchallengerally.com).\n Rally will run regardless of the weather. \n Recommend for map reading: Large Magnifying Glass\, Dividers.\n Start order: Class A (A ‘draw’ will be held for actual start positions); Class S.\n There will be an adjustment factor between 2-wd & 4-wd in Section 3.\n Ongoing information will be on www.winterchallengerally.com.\n Questions can be addressed via: johnbuffum1@gmail.com (JB).\n This rally tries to emulate the road rallies of the 60s.\n\nThe winner will be\, indeed\, the most versatile and best road rally team!

SUMMARY:VT: SCCA New England Region Summer Challenge RoadRally
DESCRIPTION:Short version – The Summer Challenge Road Rally\, with Rallymaster John Buffum\, will be sanctioned by the SCCA NER and held on Saturday\, June 19th. More information is available on https://winterchallengerally.com or by reaching out to Buffum via email: johnbuffum1@gmail.com. \n\n\n\nJune 13\, 2021: The Entry list with car numbers is posted. To clarify\, the start is at the Park and Ride next to Exit 4  near Randolph\, Vermont. The TECH FORM is also posted – you need to fill this out and bring it with you to get your Route Information. You need to have printed the Generals and Richta info as there will be none given out at Registration. \n\n\n\nJune 8\, 2021: A NEW SAMPLE MAP is posted. The original one left off the important scale. Also\, a new entry list. \n\n\n\nJune 6\, 2021: A new Entry List is posted. \n\n\n\nJune 4\, 2021: The General Instructions\, a Sample Timecard\, and Richta control info are all posted. We have 14 entries\, and a new Entry list will be posted within the week. If you have any questions\, don’t be afraid to email me. \n\n\n\nMay 25\, 2021: The Sample Routes and Info are posted.  No new entries – now’s the time :). \n\n\n\nMay 17\, 2021: The first Entry List is posted. \n\n\n\nMay 10\, 2021: Now that I’ve done an event as a competitor\, I have more insight into what happens during an event. Although it’s not necessary to score well\, it’s nice to actually see the timing point (I never saw any at Seacoast). Now that we have to stay on time – all the time – you need to have a free zone after every “Stop’ (where there isn’t a pause) to avoid speeding after the “Stop.” For a reason I’m not sure about\, the scores are better than in the past; thus\, mileages at the Start of a Leg and Timing CP’s should be accurate to the thousandth of a mile – OR – competitors need to be told that the mileage ‘rolls over’ from whatever happened to be shown on the hundredth-reading odometer at the CP. Example: At the start of an event\, you understand that the start mileage is 0.00(0) – not 0.00(4\, or something); the mileage is understood to be “0” in the thousandth place. At Timing CP’s\, a Rallymaster could decide -and tell competitors – that whatever his odo showed to the CP (in hundredths) is what the next leg starts at. \n\n\n\nApril 28\, 2021: The ENTRY INFO is posted. I’ll be putting up more info here as we go along. \n\n\n\nApril 22\, 2021: I’ve been out on the course a couple of times. It’s a nice new area – South and East of Randolph. There’s a few really good stretches of twisty roads over the Vermont hills. It’s also a nice change from the Winter Challenge (and the Seacoast Scramble) – it’s during the day so you can see the countryside – and maybe see the control locations :)! The Entry info will be up on this site next week. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMarch 15\, 2021:  I’ve picked a date for the SUMMER CHALLENGE RALLY – JUNE 19. It will start again like last year – at Exit 4 of I 89 in Randolph\, VT.;  10 am to 5 pm\, running south and east to White River Jct and then back.   More info will be available on this website as we go along; perhaps Entry info on May 1.
