SUMMARY:TX: San Antonio 2023 Historic Tour RoadRally
DESCRIPTION:San Antonio has had more battles fought within its city limits than any other town in North America. These battles occurred while San Antonio was under the jurisdiction of Spain\, the Republic of Mexico\, The Republic of Texas\, and the Confederate States of America\, not to mention the United States. This Road Rally will take you to the approximate location of each site. However\, the exact location of some of the sites is unknown\, and other sites were running battles that ranged over several miles. If you want a more detailed investigation of any site\, you are encouraged to revisit any site on your own and at your convenience—the oldest two sites date from 1813\, and the youngest one from the 1870s. \n\n\n\nThis is a non-speed social Road Rally whose route will be along city streets\, and speed bumps may be an issue for some cars. We will start on the west side of San Antonio\, proceed to the far south side\, and then complete our tour just north of downtown. It should take 90 minutes and two hours for this RoadRally as you learn about the history of San Antonio. Questions may be asked along the route\, but awards are not based on questions or a car’s finish position. This RoadRally is meant to be a fun learning event and a social outing where all participants will vote on awards at our final destination. \n\n\n\nOn the event day\, Saturday\, 12 August 2023\, participants will meet at the west side of the Walmart Superstore parking lot in San Antonio. Registration will be from 1:00 to 2:00\, with a safety briefing at 1:45. After the safety briefing\, cars will be released for the route which takes place on city streets. Our destination is The Longhorn Cafe at 1003 Tittiman Road in San Antonio.

SUMMARY:TX: Moontower 2023 RoadRally
DESCRIPTION:In 1884 and 1885\, Austin\, Texas\, was terrorized by a series of murders\, mainly of servant girls. Seven women\, five black\, and one man were killed. Six women and two men were injured. The eight killings are one of the earliest recorded serial murders\, predating the infamous Jack the Ripper by three years. The killer was never identified\, but the husband of one victim was found guilty but was later exonerated. For more information\, read the Steven Saylor novel\, A Twist at the End. \n\n\n\nThe city of Austin began looking for better ways to illuminate the city to ward off further killings. In 1894\, the city bought 31 artificial Moontowers from the city of Detroit. Tradition said that the 31 original Moontowers were installed in the shape of a Texas Star. The 165-foot towers originally had carbon-arc light bulbs which had to be lit each night and turned off each morning by a watchman who had to ascend to the top of each tower. Each tower illuminated a 1\,500-foot radius. \n\n\n\nElectricity was supplied by the new electric generators in the Austin Dam site at the present-day Tom Miller Dam. In the 1920s\, arc lamps were replaced with incandescent lamps\, which were replaced in the 1930s with mercury vapor lamps. During World War II\, a central switch automated turning all of the lamps on and off to assist with city-wide “blackouts.” Today\, the towers house LED lights. \n\n\n\nIn 1976 the Moontowers were inducted into the National Register of Historic Places. In 1995\, the remaining towers were carefully restored for their 100th anniversary. \n\n\n\nOn the event day\, Saturday\, 17 June 2023\, participants will meet at the parking lot at the corner of 51st and Lamar. Registration will be from 1:00 to 2:00 PM\, with a safety briefing at 1:45 PM. After the safety briefing\, cars will be released for the route\, which takes place on city streets. Our destination is The Moontower Saloon at 10212 Mencheca Road in South Austin. \n\n\n\n Early Registration will be through MotorsportReg.com. The price is $30.00 per car\, regardless of the number of occupants. Children are welcome\, but insurance requires that minors under 18 must have the official Minor Waiver signed by both parents. Each car must have a Driver and a Navigator\, and each must have a current vehicle inspection sticker and proof of insurance. People who register through MotorsportReg.com will find the Minor Waiver form (please print it in color) and may pay online. People may also register by contacting Ken McElroy and then pay at the event or at the parking lot at 61st and Lamar and pay as they fill out the paperwork there. \n\n\n\nThis route is along paved city roads\, but there are some fierce speed bumps. Along the way\, you will see hidden portions of Austin and be given items of local history\, and you might even be asked to answer questions about the route. \n\n\n\nIf you experience symptoms of COVID immediately before the event\, your money will be refunded. \n\n\n\nThe GOAL of the SCCA is to Have Fun with Cars! \n\n\n\nEvent Requirements\n\n\n\n1. Each car must have a Driver with a valid driver’s license\, \n\n\n\n2. Each car must have a Navigator who can read English. \n\n\n\n3. Each car must have a current vehicle registration sticker and proof of insurance. \n\n\n\n4. Minor Children (<18) are welcome but must have a Minor Waiver signed by both parents. The Waiver must be printed in color.

SUMMARY:TX: Come and Take It Road Rally
DESCRIPTION:The Lone Star Region of the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) would like to invite you to join us for the Come and Take It Road Rally. This rally is to honor the 32 Texican volunteers who left Gonzales on 27 February 1836 for the Alamo during the Texas Revolution. Two days later the detachment entered the Alamo which was commanded by William Barrett Travis and Jame Bowie. Except of Travis’s boyhood friend\, James B. Bonham\, who arrived later that day\, these heroes were the last men to enter the Alamo before it was over whelmed by Mexican forces under President/General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna on March 6 and all of the defenders were killed. This road rally will follow the approximate path of these doomed men from Gonzales to San Antonio (Bexar) but in reverse. \n\n\n\nOn the day of the event\, 25 February 2023\, participants will meet at Dellcrest Plaza in southeast San Antonio at 1:00 PM. After completing a safety briefing\, the rally will began the 90 minute rally at 2:01 PM. The route will visit Martinez\, New Berlin before skirting Seguin and entering Gonzales from the south. The destination is the Gonzales Food Market on Hero’s Square in Gonzales where the group will sample the award winning BBQ and discuss more local history before voting on awards. \n\n\n\nEarly Registration will be through MotorsportReg.com. The price is $25.00 per car regardless of the number of occupants. Children are welcomed but insurance requires that minor children\, under 18\, must have an SCCA Minor Waiver signed by both parents.
