SCCA Central Division RoadRally Championship — July Update

Spring Classic, May 31st
After years under Clarence Westberg’s watch, Tyler Linner took the reins of the Spring Land O’ Lakes Region all-pavement rally. Fourteen cars were entered, with four in Classic class (pre-1990) and ten representing Modern. The rally began with Parc Exposé, where thirteen teams donned era-appropriate clothing from the 1970s through today for Best In Show points. Bros/Byers won Best In Show with their RHD UK-market 1986 VW Golf and matching rad-era clothing!

Unsurprisingly, the former Spring Classic Rallymaster and his wife Kate Westberg handled the “Monte” timing and paper roadbook skillfully with a final score of only 37 points (37 seconds)! Frame/Johnsen drove their WRX to 70 points, with First in Classic class going to Ted and Liisa Rurup, who managed 151 points, and third Overall in their 1979 Datsun 280ZX! We were also happy to see Anderson/Fuss driving a gorgeous red Porsche 356A to sixth Overall and Second in class.

Summer Classic, June 28th
Returning the favor and playing off the success of Spring Classic, Clarence cooked up a June pavement rally on short notice! With Monte timing, the roadbook was similar to last year’s Spring Classic. In true Clarence fashion, though, it included a twist: “copy controls.” The route looped in two areas, and each team was to run each loop twice. They were scored on the difference between their first and second runs, and invisible checkpoints were randomly spaced along the loops!

Classification was split down the middle between Novice and Expert, with one Novice driver, Gary Keim, coming back after Spring Classic. Predictably, Expert teams took the top three spots, with Frame/Quenemoen getting 715.9 points. Setzepfandts won both copy controls but got hit with about 160 extra points at Downsville to come in at 288.8 overall, allowing Linner/Linner to score their first overall win in their 1963 Chevrolet Corvair Monza (and navigator Eric’s first win) at 191.9 points.

Championship Updates after the Classics!
The “Classic” rallies rearranged the top ten! Rurups’ class win brought them to a tie for 8th place at 30 points, while Jordan Johnsen moved up to 7th with 52 points but couldn’t make it to Summer Classic. Clarence Westberg’s worker points were maxed out earlier in the year, so his one Overall win got him to 6th and 53 points. Bretton Setzepfandt has been navigating himself to a solid placing at 5th and 59 points, just behind Kate Westberg with 59 points in the passenger seat. Tyler Linner had also maxed out his worker points before Spring Classic, so his win resulted in only 73 points. Stephen Frame and Brycen Setzepfandt are now tied at 74 points and First in the CENDIV RoadRally Championship.
