We’re car people, so we’ll try to stay in that realm –
- The Iron Age began around 500 BCE. This is a stretch, yet America’s industry and vehicles came from iron ore.
- From McMaster.ca: “We already know that 500 years ago, the average life was miserable. There was no central heat or air conditioning.” What would a road trip be like if we didn’t have “too hot” or “too cold” comments from those in the driver and navigator seats?
- From NASCAR.com: “The Daytona 500 is the iconic 500-mile NASCAR Cup Series season-opener held annually at Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach, Florida. Considered the most prestigious and important race in NASCAR, the Daytona has opened the NASCAR season every February since 1982.” A driver only needs to win once to be known for a lifetime as a Daytona 500 winner, which is often more meaningful than winning the Championship for a season.
- From motorsportmagazine: “Indy’s nickname, “The Brickyard,” dates back to the speedway’s early days. Its original dirt surface produced so much dust during its inaugural meeting in 1909 that founder Carl Fisher decided to pave his new circuit with 3.2 million bricks for the following season.” And, as many are known to say of the Indianapolis 500, “It is the Greatest Spectacle in Racing!”
- From onthisday.com: In 1524, 500 years ago, “Apr 17 Florentine navigator Giovanni Verrazano on a voyage for France is the first European to discover New York harbour.” In our search for references to 500, we smiled as we read this one and decided that simply including the word “navigator” would have to be in our tribute to this news…
Marking another “500” milestone, we are delighted that our friends at Richta GPS Checkpoint have reached their 500th event with Rallymaster J. Thomas vonHatten and his SCCA St. Louis Region Rally School II on Saturday, June 1st.
In a mere five years “on the street,” their series of apps for Apple and Android provide GPS scoring for road rally events with their Competitor, Scoreboard, and Rallymaster apps have revitalized road rally programs across North America and beyond.
From Road Rally eNews and the Rallymasters and Competitors who utilize Richta GPS Checkpoint, congratulations to the Richta Rally Team!
